Learning Spanish verb conjugation for kids doesn’t have to be hard or boring. Keeping it fun with simple activities makes the process easy and effective. One option is to follow the Spanish present tense verb conjugation activities in order below:
- Have your child make a set of flashcards for the verbs you’d like to practice. For example, you want to practice the conjugations for hablar (to speak), comer (to eat), and vivir (to live). On index cards, your child should write one conjugation per card like you see in the picture. They would be: hablo, hablas, habla, hablamos, habláis, hablan, como, comes, come, comemos, coméis, comen, vivo, vives, vive, vivimos, vivís, viven. Total of 18 cards.
- Put a label by each group for help. Your labels will be: I, you, he/she/you formal, we, you all (Spain), and they/you all.
- Have your child put their cards into groups. All the verbs that end in “o” mean “I” do something – hablo = I speak, como = I eat, vivo = I live. All the verbs that end in “as” or “es” mean “you” do something. Those ending in “a” or “e” mean he or she or you formal do something. Those ending in “amos”, “emos”, “imos” mean “we” do something. Those ending in “áis, éis, ís” mean “you all” (only used in Spain) do something. Those ending in “an”, “en” mean “they” or “you all” do something.
- Talk about the endings and the patterns you see. Together see if you can say some Spanish sentences using the Spanish verbs you just grouped and Spanish vocabulary you may know. Example: Comemos los tacos. = We eat the tacos.
- Then, one of you say a sentence in English and see if the other person can say it in Spanish. Leave the Spanish verb flashcards grouped and so you can see them. For example, one of you says, “We live in the house.” The other person looks for the “we” verb group to help form the verb, and then says, “Vivimos en la casa.” Continue practice sentences for a few minutes.
- Have your child close his/her eyes. Turn one group of the Spanish verb flashcards over as well as the group label. Then have your child open his/her eyes and tell you which group is missing. Do this several times. Then let your child turn some groups over for you to guess.
- Next, take 2 to 3 of the groups away, mix them up, and have your child regroup them. You may notice that he/she will catch on to the patterns of one or two groups more quickly, and that’s ok. In time, he/she will get the hang of the other group patterns.
- Take 3 groups away, and mix up the cards in the remaining 3 groups. Have a third person call out the verbs from the mixed up cards one at a time in English. The two of you race to see who can grab the correct card first. The one who gets the most cards wins. If needed, before playing quickly talk about the meanings of the verbs based on their ending patterns.
- Choose a few groups of the cards, mix them up, set a timer, and have your child group them. Then redo and have your child try to beat his/her time. Once grouped, have your child read each one aloud in Spanish and then say the English meaning.
