Spanish Vocabulary Fun Playing Password

You and your students or kids at home can have some Spanish vocabulary fun playing Password. Many people are familiar with the game Password, and I created a simple way to modify the game and use it as a fun and effective way to practice Spanish vocabulary.

I recently played Password with my students using vocabulary words they are learning. They loved it! Here is how to play:

How to Play Spanish Vocabulary Password

  • Make a list of about 20-30 vocabulary words that you write on the board, or pass out on a list.
  • Place students into pairs and give them index cards, cut in half, to get more mileage on the cards!.
  • Within each pair, one person writes half the words, one per card, and the other person writes the other half.
  • Each player holds on to his own cards.
  • Begin play with each pair as a team.
  • When it is a team’s turn, one player gives one word hints for each of his cards while the other player tries to guess the Spanish vocabulary word.
  • He can continue to give one word hints until the player guesses the word. OR the guesser can say ‘Pasa” (pah- sah = Pass) telling the hinter to move to the next word.
  • The idea is to guess as many Spanish vocabulary words as possible within a one minute set time.
  • After the minute, tally up one point per guessed word.
  • Any “passed” words count as a point against total words guessed.
  • Teacher keeps score on the board for each team.

Easy Ways to Modify to Add Challenge

There are easy ways you can modify the game to add challenge. Here are some ideas:

  • Print Spanish vocabulary picture cards instead of having students write words on index cards.
  • To add challenge, have students give hints in Spanish or a combination of English and Spanish depending on what your students would be able to do.

Ideas to Modify for a Large Group

  • Put students in groups of 3. Two of the three will “play” while the third person “runs the game”. The two players basically play against each other. Give each group a different list of words so that as the guessing is going on aloud, people don’t overhear guesses from other groups. This modification could work well as an end of unit or semester practice when you have a large number of vocabulary the students have learned. After groups finish their list, then have them trade lists and have them rotate in their groups so that the one “running the game” gets to play.
  • Play as a large group all together by having the “guessers” write their answers. This way all teams can play simultaneously. If needed, increase the one minute time to 1-1/2 minutes or what you determine would be a good amount of time.

I think this game has many learning benefits. It acts as a fun way to review and gets students speaking and listening. It challenges them to think in Spanish especially if they are giving hints in Spanish. They get writing practice as they write their index cards. And, they become motivated to think because it is fun!
